A woman named Jaela Bumpas posted a video on X, revealing that her husband had staged a fake proposal at the Moana Surfrider resort in Honolulu, Hawaii, to get them some free drinks.
The video shows her husband get on one knee in front of a full restaurant of people. Jaela nods, and the happy couple embrace and kiss to the cheers from diners.

However, the video, which was taken by an onlooker, had people divided on whether the stunt was appropriate or not.
“You steal from the restaurant you were at, you’re proud enough of doing so to post it on X, and 347,000 people liked the post. Sad commentary on a lot of levels,” one person wrote.
“I consider that theft,” someone declared, while another wrote, “Deceiving people is not the win you think it is.”
“People like this will ruin sweet gestures like this for all of the genuine people,” someone else said.
Some were supportive of the plan.
“lmaooo I love when people with the same sense of humor date,” a user said.
“Technically not a scam because you did get married,” another pointed out.
“Before y’all start judging, have you never faked a birthday to get free dessert?” another questioned.
“God forbid a man has fun and gets to enjoy a sweet treat through his own mischievous schemes,” one wrote.
Bumpas told TODAY.com that it wasn’t the restaurant that gave them free drinks, but rather another diner who treated them to margaritas.
Bumpas added that the comments took a dark turn, which almost made her delete the video.
“A lot of people reached out, which felt good, but then it was also a frustrating experience due to the racism,” Bumpas told TODAY. “It made me want to delete the tweet a lot of times because it started becoming more racist.”
