Couples Turning To ChatGPT For Relationship Counselling

Bickering couples are heralding a new secret weapon in the fight to keep their relationships alive. Welcome to AI relationship counselling!

Couples unable to afford expensive therapists are instead unpacking their issues with AI. And the advice has not been that bad, according to couple Marcus McGehee and Bri Postlmayr.

Creating your own Chat GPT therapist involves setting up the AI tool to respond according to your chosen prompts, for example, “offering supportive statements” or “asking open-ended questions”

You can even tell it to respond as your favourite psychotherapist.

And unlike the hard-to-swallow truths of therapy, responses from an AI therapist are soft and non-judgemental.

However, this can be a bit of a problem with patients able to ask for different advice if they don’t like the first answer.

McGehee told The Project that they were looking to improve their relationship, but “didn’t want to go full-scale therapist right off the bat.”

Postlmayr said that it was helpful for where they are in their relationship, not having “super big issues,” but mainly needing some help with communication styles.

“It’s one of the best ways to get an unbiased opinion,” McGehee added.

“You have some level of anonymity with this,” McGehee said. “You feel more comfortable sharing things you maybe wouldn't feel comfortable sharing with another person.”
