Bob Katter Reveals Billion-Dollar Hung Parliament Wish List

Maverick MP Bob Katter has revealed his wish list, which includes a $1 billion flood-proof tunnel in far north Queensland, if he ends up holding the balance of power after the federal election.

Katter, who has held the electorate of Kennedy since 1993, has warned Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton that he will negotiate with “ruthless brutality” if he holds the balance of power in a hung parliament.

Katter said the party leaders would need to commit to spending $1 billion on a one-km-long tunnel from Gordonvale, a town south of Cairns, to the Atherton Tablelands, to ensure residents can be evacuated during natural disasters.

“There’s rage in my soul. Brisbane has 36km of tunnels, which is a nice addition to their leisurely lifestyle. Ours is a matter of life or death,” Mr Katter told The Australian.

Katter will also demand hundreds of millions of dollars for a new dam and irrigation scheme to support owner-operated farms near Hughenden in exchange for his support.

Building dams encourages the populations of small towns to grow, Katter says.

Katter revealed to The Australian that he would also throw all of his support behind his son, Katter’s Australian Party state leader, Robbie Katter.

The pair have been advocating for north Queensland to become a separate territory.

Bob Katter will also demand hundreds of millions of dollars for an irrigation dam in exchange for his support.

Dutton has shared that he would call Mr Katter first in the event of a hung parliament, as well as independent Western Sydney MP Dai Le and teal independent Allegra Spender.

Although Katter has supported the Coalition after the 2010 federal election, he is open to negotiating with either side in politics.

“But Anthony has failed totally to take control, and I’ve told Peter Dutton repeatedly that you’ve got to be brutal and ruthless. You don’t run a government by being nice to everybody, that just doesn’t work,” Mr Katter told The Australian.
