Brendan Pang
Western Australia Age: 24 Occupation: Social Worker
Brendan has a special weapon in his corner, but he knows he needs to utilise her a little more before entering the MasterChef Australia house. His mum, Dany, owns her own cake business, and the self-described savoury cook with a passion for Mauritian cooking – which includes the flavours of French, Chinese and Indian – is now leaning on mum for some quick sweet treat training.
Soon after their son was born, Brendan’s Mauritian parents took him back to their homeland, where they remained for four years. Returning to Australia for Brendan to enroll in school, the family still spent many school holidays back in Mauritius. He recalls travelling the island with his mum, eating at various street stalls and routinely snacking on shaved ice.
When home in Perth, everything centred around his grandparent’s home in Riverton. Brendan says time after school was always spent at their home and it was here he learnt from his grandmother an abundance of Mauritian dishes including dumplings and noodles. Every Sunday was a large traditional Mauritian brunch with fried meats, chutneys, rice and soups.
After graduating high school Brendan commenced a degree in Architecture but after two years switched to Social Work, buoyed by several volunteer placements he had completed. In 2016, he graduated from Curtin University with his Bachelor’s degree and within months moved to Broome, working in child protection. He threw himself into the Broome lifestyle and enjoys teaching boxing at the local youth club and working with local kids.
Brendan has always loved cooking and being creative in the kitchen and he dreams of opening his own café. When he is not cooking he loves to paint, play basketball and fish.
Brendan was also seen on Season 12 (Back To Win) Of MasterChef Australia.
