Uber Driver’s Intense Passenger Rules Divide

An intense list of rules in an Uber driver’s car has divided the internet into whether the rules are just basic etiquette or overkill.

A Reddit user posted a photo of the list of rules that was laminated and taped on the seat of the car, to the popular thread Mildly Interesting.

“Greetings I welcome you as my passenger. Here are [the] care etiquette rules I require to ensure a smooth ride for us,” the list read.

The list then commences with a pet rule, although they are welcome on board, they “must remain either in your lap or on the floor at all times to avoid pet hair for the next passenger.”

“Do your best to clean up after your pets to avoid cleanup fees,” the rules continued.

The next rules then urged any passenger with children to keep them “safely seated at all times. No kicking seats or playing with doors/windows to avoid tickets.”

The driver then urges passengers to ensure they use headphones if they are planning to take any phone calls during the ride.

“I do not want to hear speaker phone conversations. This goes for social media scrolling and all,” adding that they will not turn down the radio for any calls.

“I do not want to hear your corporate meetings or personal business dealings,” they wrote. “Have them before entering or once exiting my car. No exceptions. Do not ask me to [turn down the radio].”

The driver then says there is strictly no eating, drinking or vaping in the car. And if any mess is made, the driver writes that they will report it to Uber and charge a $50 cleaning fee.

The driver also threatens to report anyone who doesn’t cover their nose or mouth when coughing or sneezing. “Wear a mask if you’re sick.”

“Wearing a seatbelt is up to you. You could potentially be ticketed, however,” another rule read.

“If at any point you're not enjoying your ride, refuse to respect my rules, or feel uncomfortable in any way, I will gladly pull over so that you may request another driver. Ask me to right away.”

The list concludes with the driver thanking passengers for respecting the “simple car etiquette rules.”

Most Reddit users thought the list of rules was quite “reasonable”, with many saying that most of it is just common courtesy.

Some people thought the only unreasonable rule was the refusal to turn down the music.

“The only unreasonable thing is the driver's refusal to turn his music down or off. Everything else is just common courtesy. Keep your pets/kids safe in their seats, don't have your speakerphone on, don't make a mess or leave smells in the car by eating/smoking/vaping. Reasonable,” one person wrote.

“That said, the all-caps and preachy tone are incredibly off-putting,” they continued.

“The only one I have an issue with is him not turning down his music. I mean, it might be OK, but come on, man, I had a long night and I hate the f**king Eagles,” another person wrote.

“I'm OK with all of this except the business calls and turning down the music,' one person wrote, adding, “'You're providing a service to someone paying you. You need to cater to any reasonable needs.”

“You're not my friend giving me a ride. You're the person providing a service I paid for.”

Some were confused at how many people were defending the driver.

“The tone of it reads as ‘get in, sit down, shut the f**k up, and f**k you.’ I mean, ‘If at any point you’re not enjoying the ride, tell me and I’ll pull over so you can get out.’ Are you serious? I can’t believe how many people here are defending this,” one person wrote.

“Gonna be at my destination before I finish reading it,” another joked.
