Earlier this month, while performing in Melbourne, Rodrigo took a brutal plunge through the stage trap door mid-concert.
The pop star was quick to assure concertgoers that she was okay. “Oh my God, that was fun! I’m okay. Sometimes, there’s just a hole in the stage,” she laughed.
In reality, the fall was as brutal as it appeared, ending in a precautionary trip to the hospital that had a meaningful silver lining for the 21-year-old.
On her recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Rodrigo watched the viral moment back.
"Watching the video back, it’s pretty terrifying,” Rodrigo told Fallon. “I mean, the show must go on; that’s showbiz, baby.”
Rodrigo went on to explain that she did go to the hospital after the show to confirm that she didn’t have a concussion.“It was actually kind of a beautiful thing, and I’m really happy it happened in hindsight,” she told Fallon.
“That was my next stop — Australia after the Philippines. I was thinking about my family and my heritage and my relatives. And I feel and I was all shaken up. I went to the hospital after, nothing happened, but they just wanted to make sure I didn’t have a concussion.”
“Randomly, the nurse was a Filipino man with the same name as my grandpa, who just passed away a few months ago. I was like, wow, that was him looking out for me and making sure I didn’t get hurt. I’m really happy it happened.”
Rodrigo’s performance at the Philippine Arena in Manila was the biggest of her career, performing for more than 50,000 adoring fans.
Once she headed to Australia, she completed eight more shows to officially close out the Guts world tour after 95 performances.
Speaking with Rolling Stones recently, Rodrigo said: “I think it’s the end of the Guts era! I love this era so much. It was so much fun to get to create and share with the fans.
“I’m so grateful that fans have embraced Guts in the way that they have... I’m proud of the album, and I’m really proud of the musical elements that we explored and so proud of it lyrically. “The fact that people have embraced it the way that they have just means so much to me, and I’m really excited for a break and for what’s to come.”
