Mount Fuji Remains Snowless In October For First Time On Record

Mount Fuji has made it through the month of October without snow for the first time in 130 years.

Japan’s highest mountain has remained snowless until November for the first time since records began in 1894, after the country sweltered through a joint-hottest summer on record.

Last year, snow caps began forming on October 5, with the country’s weather agency saying snow is usually first detected by October 2 on average.

“Temperatures were high this summer, and these high temperatures continued into September, deterring cold air,” Yutaka Katsuta, a forecaster at Kofu Local Meteorological Office told AFP.

The previous latest date of snowfall on Mount Fuji was OCtober 26, which happened in 1955 and 2016.

The first snowfall on Mount Fuji signifies the arrival of winter and has been announced by Kofu Local Meteorological Office every year since 1894.
