Government Hands Down Action Plan On Veteran Suicide

Established three years ago, the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide found that - between the years of 1985 and 2021 - just over 2007 serving or former defence personnel died by suicide.

Today, the PM is fronting the cameras to affirm his government’s commitment to the bulk of the Commission’s recommendations aimed at reducing the rate of suicide within the ADF.

The government promises to adopt a policy of mandatory discharge for ADF members convicted of sexual offences and committing to an inquiry into sexual violence in the ADF - believed to contribute to the number of suicides in the defence force.

It also promised more rigorous vetting of defence leaders and promised the immediate formation of a new statutory body aimed at preventing suicides.

Grieving families are hoping it all leads to lasting change.

Dr Nikki Jamieson’s son Daniel took his own life in 2014 after enduring relentless bullying in the ADF, and she told The Project that she is “Really pleased the majority of the recommendations have been accepted.”

“It would've been nice for all of the recommendations to be accepted… But overall I'm very happy the majority has been accepted.”

Jamieson said she believes they “would have made a difference” in helping Daniel.

“Understanding suicide in a bit more detail… would've been helpful, but understanding moral injury. Moral injury is when a person feels their moral framework and their moral belief system has been violated and it actually really significantly impacts mental health… So, had we had known that beforehand, it may well have helped Daniel.”

“I hope it's not just another bureaucratic layer,” she continued.

“I hope the right people with the right skills and expertise are recruited in the roles, whatever they look like. But I'm really hopeful that we have learnt from previous mistakes… the voice has been loud in this space, so fingers crossed we can have a body established to make improvements but can also measure those improvements.”
