Convenience store chain Lawson has launched Nomu mayo, or drinkable mayonnaise, described as "the new item that mayo fanatics have long been waiting for!".
While the beverage is described as a "mayonnaise-style drink", commenters discussing the controversial drink on Reddit agreed it tasted remarkably similar to pure mayonnaise.
One person who tried the beverage while eating onigiri said, "If you take sips of it while eating a food that would normally go well with mayo, not so bad. As a drink by itself… can't recommend nearly as much," while another said, "It tastes just as horrific as you're imagining."
Another commenter who braved the beverage said it tasted "exactly like a very liquidy Kewpie mayo but extra salty," adding that they are "Generally a fan of mayo, but I couldn't muster more than the one sip."
Others were not game to try the unique creation, calling it "gross", "disgusting" and "diabolical".
While mayonnaise is a popular condiment in Japan, it's yet to be seen whether mayo fans will embrace the drink, which is still in its test sale period.
