Miguel Maestre

Miguel Maestre

Often heard before he is seen, The Crazy Bull’s unmistakable Spanish accent and over the top energy is exactly why he’s so loved on 10’s TV Week Gold Logie winning lifestyle program The Living Room. After spending his twenties becoming a successful chef and restaurateur, he then found his calling teaching the country how to cook on television. With his trademark of incorporating Spanish ingredients and techniques into Australian cuisine, will his paso doble prove paramount?

Do you find you have a competitive nature?

I never call myself competitive, I put in perspective. As a chef you have to do a good job because people are eating what you are preparing. You need to try your best and I just do it for the reward of the people. I just want to be the best version of myself, I don’t do things to fail, and that’s good enough for me.

What’s your relationship with dance?

A lot of alcohol and dance go together in Spain. I’ve never been shy; I’ll be the first one to dance on the dance floor and I’m not scared to be the clown and make a fool of myself. My technique of dancing is in the negative. I love music, I love salsa, but I have never had any training. To bring it back to food, it would be like me loving the taste of it but, not knowing how to cook it.

What is your biggest threat in the competition?

I think for a 115kg bloke like me, the biggest challenge is fitness. It’s a massive shock. Fitness will be my biggest enemy as I’m flat footed and I’m heavy. I think people who are very fit have an advantage. Michelle Bridges she is so fit; she is a weapon. So I think someone like her will find it very easy.

What does your family think of you taking part?

We have watched this show together all our lives. So it’s weird that they’re going to be watching me. I just want to make them proud, I don’t care what the public say about me, whether they like me I have never cared one bit but what my family think is the most important thing in life. I want to make them proud.

What has been the most difficult aspect so far?

Walking! Who would have thought that it’s so hard to walk like a dancer? That and the synchronisation. It’s going to be a very tough steak to chew.
