Top End Fisherman Lands Mysterious Giant Oarfish

A Tiwi Islands Adventures fisherman went viral after he landed one of the world’s elusive fish: an oarfish.

A photo of two fishermen holding the giant specimen went viral after Fishing Australia TV shared the photo.

“Our skipper Curtis Peterson from Tiwi Islands Adventures has caught some wild fish for a young fisho, but this one takes the cake!” the caption read.

The oarfish is also known by a gloomy nickname, ‘The Doomsday Fish.’ The fish garnered the name as it was thought to be a symbol of bad news.

The legend is that higher powers send the fish as a warning sign to those who catch a glimpse of the fish.

NT News fishing columnist Alex Julius said that these fish are “very rare to land”, with “most being found washed up ashore already deceased.”

“Apparently, they’re not that great eating either, having a gelatinous-like taste to them.”

Commenters were quick to point out the fish’s resemblance to seahorses, Puff the Magic Dragon, sea snakes and Falcor from The Neverending Story.

“Well I have seen Catfish and Dogfish and Seahorses (but this is the) first time seeing a Horse-fish,” one person wrote.

“It’s Puff the magic sea dragon who lives under the sea isn’t it,” another added.

“Name’s crazy horse. He’s from Adelaide,” one commenter wrote. “I’d call it the Bogan Barracuda”.

“Looks like the fish version of the bloke at the pub who always has a wild story and an even wilder mullet”, another added.
