The flavour shot to popularity with the viral rise of Dubai Chocolate in late 2023, which saw influencers across the world pay extortionate amounts for the pistachio cream, tahini, and crispy kataifi-filled chocolate bar.
The humble nut became the hottest flavour of the year, with pistachios featured in everything from croissants to protein bars and a dedicated pistachio spread that has Biscoff and Nutella shaking in their boots.
To accommodate the booming trend, Aussie supermarkets have been devising new ways to offer pistachio-flavoured products.
“We’ve noticed a real buzz around pistachio lately – it’s popping up in everything from desserts and snacks to savoury dishes,” a spokesperson for Woolworths told news.com.au.
“At Woolworths, we’re always looking to introduce exciting new flavours and products that inspire our customers, and we’re thrilled to be expanding our range to meet this growing demand.”
Last year, Woolies launched their Pistachio Cheesecake, which sold more than 80 per cent of the first batch in the first three weeks.
It also released an exclusive range of Messina gelato tubs, with the Pistachio Praline variety coming out on top as the most popular flavour from the line.
While Australia may be fairly new to the pistachio craze, food blogger Nectro Vlangos says it is a well-known flavour in European countries.
Speaking with news.com.au, he said, “Pistachio spreads and creams have been popular in Italy for a long while now, so I am glad that Australia is catching on.”
A spokesperson for Coles confirmed that they’re well and truly aware of the pistachio obsession.
“We have seen a noticeable trend in customers seeking pistachio-flavoured food items, and as such we’re working to meet this demand and offer products in this flavour to be enjoyed.”
