Paul Kelly’s Iconic ‘How To Make Gravy’ Turned Into Film

Paul Kelly’s iconic Christmas anthem ‘How To Make Gravy’ has been adapted into a movie nearly 30 years after the hit song was released.

The official two-minute trailer gave us a first look at the film.

When the news of the film adaptation broke, Kelly said in a statement: "Dan and Joe and Rita and Angus and Dolly and all the others have been stuck inside that song so long, I'm glad they're going to get a chance to live life a different way.”

Director Nick Waterman and ARIA award-winning singer-songwriter Megan Washington had approached Kelly about making the movie about five years ago.

“How to Make Gravy is a meditation on humanity, love and connection,” Waterman said.

“It’s a celebration of family, songlines, self-respect, and seizing the present moment to create inner change, no matter how small.”

Washington added: “In every way, music is the heart, soul, and bones of this film. Music is powerful, healing, and enduring, as the song’s 30-year legacy confirms, and it has been a creative privilege to bring this beloved Australian Christmas carol to life.”

‘How To Make Gravy’ was released in November 1996 and recounts the story of a man named Joe spending his first Christmas in prison.

This same character is also referenced in ‘To Her Door’ and ‘Love Never Runs On Time.’

In the film, actor Daniel Henshall plays Joe, while his brother Dan will be played by Brenton Thwaites.

Kate Mulvany plays Joe’s sister Stella, and Damon Herriman will play her husband Roger.

French actress Agathe Rousselle will play Joe’s wife, Rita, and Jonah Wren Phillips will play their son, Angus.

Twin sisters Frank and Dolly will be played by Rose Statham and Izzy Westlake, respectively.

Hugo Weaving will be starring as a new character that is not referenced in the song.

As for Mary, Dan’s daughter, ‘Boy Swallows Universe’s’ Eloise Rothfield will be playing that role.

How To Make Gravy will be available to stream on Binge from Sunday, December 1, 2024.
