Based on the book of the same name, the computer-animated 2001 film Shrek was directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson. However, the Ogre had come to life years earlier.
In 1995, DreamWorks cast comedian Chris Farley to play the title character, and they created a 1-minute animation test featuring Shrek dancing to James Brown's "I Feel Good."
Farley passed away in 1997, and Mike Myers went on to play Shrek.
The original Shrek test footage was met with horror and disgust, leading to a halted production and the dismissal of 40 employees.
The film then landed in the hands of a CGI Studio in California, who gave Shrek the glow-up of the century.
While the original Shrek was much closer to the character created by William Stief's in his 1990 kids book of the same name, DreamWorks felt that he was simply too terrifying for the film's young audience, and they weren't wrong.
"This would've been a horror movie if it'd been released in theaters," one user wrote.
"Fully believe I would be a serial killer today if this was the shrek I grew up with," another added.
"Old shrek looks like those bacteria in the soap commercials," a third said.
One commented that, "This feels like a fever dream".
While another suggested that "he could be shrek's cousin shruk".
