Goldberg and her co-hosts were discussing a new platform that advises house hunters on people's political affiliations in the neighbourhood.
The EGOT winner was not a fan of the idea, believing it would only cause further division.
"I was raised, you never asked anybody how they were voting. I would say, 'Ma, who are you going to vote for?' and she'd just give me that look. And she'd say to me, 'Caryn, that's nobody's business,'" Goldberg said.
Caryn, pronounced Karen, is the legendary performer's birth name.
Whoopi was born Caryn Elaine Johnson and chose her stage name after the popular gag gift, Whoopee Cushions.
The EGOT winner wrote about the journey to finding a stage name in her memoir Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me.
"Once I started getting parts in plays, I wanted a name that sounded more interesting. Caryn Johnson wasn't it," she wrote.
"Some people at the Rep called me Whoopi because I would sometimes let loose with a fart. I added 'Cush-ione' to it, with a French pronunciation."
