The problem is with the varnish used to coat the medals.
The manufacturer was forced to remove a key ingredient at the last minute, after it was banned by the E-U for being a known carcinogen.
So far, more than 100 athletes have asked for replacements.
Aussie boxer Caitlan Parker won a bronze medal at the Paris Games, and she joined us.
“I can't believe I've got one of these and it's mine. And, you know, what a journey. This is my life's work in this medal right here but it has tarnished a bit now,” she said.
While Parker reiterates that “I'm grateful to have it and it's such a beautifully designed medal”, she went on to explain that “the producer guarantees it against premature ageing until 2026 so I should be able to get a replacement.”
When it comes to how she would feel about the Olympic medal being replaced, the Olympian explained that she’s conflicted.
“This is literally what they put around me. I got to stand on the podium. I got my life's dream, I got my Olympic medal and to change it will be, I don't know…”
“I want to share it with as many people as I can. I love going to schools and businesses and be able to share the journey, the message and the medal,”
“As a kid, if I touched an Olympic medal I would be stoked”.
