‘Royal’ Baby Names Are At Risk Of Going Extinct In 2025

BabyCenter has released its annual data report revealing what names are at risk of going extinct, and it looks like royal names are on the chopping block.

BabyCenter, a US-based online company that provides information on all things conception, pregnancy and birth, uses data submitted by registered users of their website to determine trends in baby names.

“Hundreds of thousands of parents register their babies’ names and we analyze the biggest trends that shake up the rankings,” BabyCenter editor and name specialist Rebekah Wahlberg said.

Catherine, the name of the Princess of Wales, has plummeted down a mammoth 221 spots in 2024. Other royal names that took a hit include Anne, after Princess Anne, Phillip, after the late Prince Philip, Albert and Edward. Each of these names has fallen more than 100 spots on the list.

In a statement to FOX Television Stations, Wahlberg, said that "The decline in the popularity of royal family names is an intriguing phenomenon,"

"These names have historically been very popular, and given the amount of royal family stardom – which typically helps a name grow in popularity – it's unexpected to see the trend reverse."

Naming trends from the '80s and '90s have also experienced sharp declines in popularity. Jamie, which was a top-100 name from 1974 until 1996, was the top-falling girl name in 2024, tumbling 320 spots.

"Being a Millennial myself, it's a little bittersweet to see popular Millennial names fade. But it's completely normal for Gen Z and Millennial parents to want to switch things up, so I get it," Wahlberg said.
