Sources say that Hulu is in the final stages of ordering a pilot for the reboot, which will focus on a new Slayer, with Gellar appearing in a recurring role rather than leading the series.
Buffy’s original lore dictated that only one Slayer could exist at a time, however, in its final season that notion was upended with the awakening of hundreds of potential Slayers for the show’s endgame.
Dolly Parton's production company, Sandollar, which co-produced the original series, is also reportedly attached to the project.
A year ago Parton confirmed the reboot was in the works, saying: “They’re still working on that. They’re thinking about bringing it back and revamping it.”
Self-confessed lifelong Buffy fan and Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao is also set to direct the pilot and work as an executive producer on the much-anticipated series.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” originated as a film, released in 1992 and starring Kristy Swanson in the title role.
Five years later, the TV series version starring Gellar aired, where it became a hallmark show of the ‘90s.
In 2023, Gellar had shared that she wasn’t for a Buffy reboot, saying: “I am very proud of the show that we created, and [a revival] doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up.
However, the 47-year-old sang a different tune last year after seeing other successful reboots.
“It’s funny, I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” Gellar said.
“But watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter, and realising there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”
Nora and Lilla Zuckerman will executive produce the Buffy reboot with Zhao, Gellar, and the original show’s EPs Gail Berman, Fran and Kaz Kuzui of Suite B.
