Variety had reported that Universal Pictures had acquired the rights to the film, based on Spears’ bestselling memoir “The Woman in Me”.
In August of last year, Spears teased fans with a statement on X, which read: “Excited to share with my fans that I've been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favourite movies … stay tuned.”
Marc Platt, an American film producer, is responsible for iconic films such as “La La Land,” “Legally Blonde” and “Wicked”, and is set to produce the pop star's biopic.
Spear’s memoir, titled “The Woman in Me”, was released in October 2023 and reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list.
The memoir covered her career and personal life, and the controversial 13-year conservatorship under her father, James P. Spears, that put her in the spotlight after the #FreeBritney movement.
While on the Golden Globes red carpet, John M. Chu spoke with Billboard‘s Tetris Kelly about the much-anticipated biopic.
“I really can’t talk about that yet,” the Wicked director said.
“I’m a big fan of Britney. I’ve been a fan since I was young, and she was young, and she was one of 12 acts at the Shrine Auditorium.”
“So I want to do her justice and tell her story right. But we’ll see. We’re developing it now, and it’s a long road ahead,” he added.
Back in November, Chu told The Hollywood Reporter that Spears “has a story that deserves to be told properly. There’s a lot about us in it.”
At the time, he confirmed, “We haven’t written the script yet, we haven’t hired a writer yet. But in this initial conception, I think it’s a lot about how we treat people, young people, stars that we think we own, women, mothers,”
“There’s a lot of things in there that I would love to explore.”
