At a press conference on January 7, President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his interest in buying Greenland, emphasising its importance to US national security and suggesting tariffs on Denmark if the proposal is rejected.
The proposal sparked strong reactions from global leaders.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated, “The idea expressed about Greenland is obviously not a good one. But maybe more important, it’s obviously one that’s not going to happen.”
Additionally, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed his confusion about Trump’s “obsession,” questioning what the November presidential election had to do with "invading Greenland or seizing it by force."
