With its release not until December 2026, Universal Pictures has not yet revealed any plot details for the fifth instalment of the iconic franchise set in a land far, far away.
What they have revealed is a core cast announcement with Mike Meyers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz all reprising their roles in the Shrek Universe.
Zendaya will join them as the ogres’ daughter ‘Felicia.’
The announcement was made in a mere 28-second teaser that shows the characters looking into a magical mirror.
We are given our first look at Felicia as she witnesses a topless image of her dad and exclaims, “Ew, Dad.”
Universal captioned the announcement with “Far Far Away’s Finest are coming.”
When Zendaya is announced at the end of the video, the voiceover even goes so far as to say, “Oh damn” - clearly, they are also in shock to have the superstar joining the franchise.
The December 2026 release coincides with the 25th anniversary of the franchise, marking it an extra special occasion.
The announcement has amassed 2.6 million views in the nine hours since its release and has rocketed to the number one trending spot on YouTube.
It’s safe to say that the people are welcoming Shrek back and are eager to see what is certain to be another iconic instalment.
