Vito beat out nearly 2,000 other dogs to take out the top spot, with show judge George Milutinovich saying, "To look at a pug is to put a smile on your face."
"Compact, features, movement — everything a pug should be," Milutinovich said. "Wow. Just wow. Lots of dogs in a small package."
Milutinovich asked the pug's handler, Michael Scott, if Vito knew he had won, to which Scott replied, "He's very smug; I think he knows."
Two-year-old Vito was also ranked the No. 1 ranked pug in all systems and the No. 2 toy dog in America.
Vito walked away with the coveted red, white and blue Best in Show ribbon and $20,000, while a Welsh Terrier named Verde was named Reserve Best in Show.
The National Dog Show has been televised since 2002 and is a popular Thanksgiving tradition, airing after the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
