The newly relaunched magazine announced that it is reviving its iconic centrefold, a section that made its raunchy debut in the April 1972 edition of Cosmopolitan US featuring Hollywood hunk Burt Reynolds.
Editor-in-chief at the time, and pioneering feminist author Helen Gurley Brown, had made the decision to put a naked man in the US magazine, stating that women had the same "visual appetites" as men. In his memoir 'But Enough About Me', Reynolds, "It would be a milestone in the sexual revolution, and she said I was the one man who could pull it off."
At the time, Cosmopolitan Australia didn't follow suit, but Cleo magazine did, and continued to do so until it was phased out in the early '90s.
Speaking on the decision to bring back the centrefold, Cosmopolitan Australia's editor, Tess Ogle said, "The modern Cosmopolitan reader isn't just flipping through pages; she's making waves, breaking boundaries, and owning her desires."
"Also, the one question we were asked repeatedly when we relaunched Cosmo back into Australia with overwhelming support this year was, 'Please, tell us you're bringing back the centrefold?!' Well, we heard loud and clear – our readers want bold, they want fresh, and they want content that speaks to the empowered woman of today.
"So, we're delivering just that by reviving the centrefold in a way that feels authentic, exciting, and oh-so-Cosmo. We're excited to make history together. Because Cosmo doesn't just follow trends, we set them."
Publisher of Cosmopolitan, Katarina Kroslakova, said that "by reintroducing the centrefold, we're not just turning pages, we're turning heads and starting conversations. This isn't about nostalgia – though we love that too – it's about igniting a movement that celebrates confidence, diversity, and the multifaceted nature of attraction."
The December-January edition of Cosmopolitan Australia features model and Netflix's Heartbreak High star, Josh Heuston.
"Growing up with two little sisters, Cosmopolitan was a magazine that was always around at home," Heuston said in a statement. "Being asked to be on the cover of Cosmopolitan is already a huge honour but being part of the new look centrefold feature makes this moment even more special. We had so much fun collaborating on set – I'm incredibly proud to be part of the magazine's history in such a unique way!"
Get your Blue-Tak ready, because the issue will be available to purchase on December 2.
