Phil Collins Reveals How His Health Battle Has Stopped Him From Playing Music

The 74-year-old Genesis drummer and Grammy winner speaks out about how creating music is no longer part of his life.

Speaking to MOJO magazine, Collins explained that he thinks about heading into the studio but is not able to anymore.

“The thing is, I’ve been sick. I mean very sick.”

In his 2024 documentary ‘Phil Collins: Drummer First’, the musician spoke about how he has had to adjust to no longer being able to play music.

“It’s still kind of sinking in a bit… I’ve spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock.”

Collins has previously spoken about how drumming since he was five years old has affected his health, too.

Impacting his hands and feet, he used to tape the drumsticks to his hands to get by.

Now in retirement, the music legend has said, “If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything,”

“If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll have a crack at it. But I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles.”

His final performance was in March 2022, alongside Genesis bandmates Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks.
