Writing for New York Magazine, Abe explained how 75-year-old Streep used wire cutters to evacuate her property on January 8.
“My aunt Meryl Streep received an order to evacuate on Jan. 8, but when she tried to leave, she discovered that a large tree had fallen over in her driveway, blocking her only exit,” Abe wrote.
“Determined to make it out, she borrowed wire cutters from a neighbor, cut a car-size hole in the fence she shared with the neighbors on the other side, and drove through their yard to escape.”
Streep owns a home in Pasadena, close to the Eaton fire, and it is believed that her house was unaffected by the fires.
The LA wildfires have been described as among the most destructive in the state’s history, having left more than 16,000 structures damaged or destroyed, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, there have been 29 confirmed deaths.
