Kardashian caused a stir when she walked onto the Met Gala red carpet in the exact dress Monroe wore during a sultry performance on John F. Kennedy’s birthday in 1962.

Many criticised the reality star for allegedly ruining the dress, leaving it frayed and torn.

In an interview on the Today Show, she told host Savannah Guthrie that she was shocked that people did not know who Marilyn Monroe was.

"We were just talking. You said you were shocked on TikTok, some people don't even know who Marilyn Monroe was."

"That was the most shocking thing to me and that's why I was so happy to at least have that opportunity and that Ripley's gave me the opportunity to share this moment so that it could live on."

Kardashian added: "I respect her, and I understand how much this dress means to American history. With the theme being American, I thought, what is more American than Marilyn Monroe singing 'Happy Birthday' to the president of the United States."

Kardashian added that “it was such a process” to get into the look without ruining the heirloom dress.

"I put the dress on on the bottom of the carpet, went up the stairs, I probably had it on for four minutes and then I changed right at the top of the stairs."

The beauty guru also said that the dress was not damaged, and that Ripley’s had handlers that put the dress on her.
