The 19-year-old won the US Open and rocketed into the Top 20 WTA Rankings.
Raducanu won the coveted BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award to top off the year.
Congratulations from all corners of the sporting world were made, but footballer-turned-pundit Michael Owen’s message caught the ire of Twitter.
Owen’s message started lovely.
“Congratulations to @EmmaRaducanu who thoroughly deserves to be crowned Sports Personality of the Year 2021,” he said on Twitter.
But the second part of the tweet was a lesson in how not to humblebrag.
“Makes me feel very old that she’s the same age as I was waaaaay back in 1998,” Owen said.
The tweet was completed with a photo of a very young Owen holding his own award when he won in 1998.
Twitter users quickly flooded Owen’s tweet with replies with their own photos of successes.
“Congratulations Emma, here’s a picture of me winning the hotel darts tournament in Mallorca in 2013,” one user mocked.
“Congratulations Emma. Here's a picture of a dog I fostered a few years back,” said another.
“Well done Emma here’s a picture of me eating a sausage roll a few weeks back,” added a user.
Owen’s tweet has been quoted more than 5,000 times, with many calling it and its replies ‘the thread of 2021’.
