Based on the 1998 book by Louis Sachar, the 2003 film adaptation starring Shia Labeouf and Sigourney Weaver is a cult-classic. The film follows Stanley Yelnats, played by Labeouf, who is wrongly accused of a crime and sent to a juvenile detention camp called Camp Green Lake. There, he and the other boys are forced to dig holes as punishment. However, the TV series is set to be much more female-forward in its casting. The official logline for the project states, “In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.” Written by Alina Mankin with Liz Phang as showrunner, the Holes TV series will follow Hayley (played by Shay Rudolph), a teenage girl sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden (Greg Kinnear) forces the campers to dig holes. SNL’s Aidy Bryant has also been confirmed as the character ‘Sissy’, a trustworthy big sister figure to the girls. Rounding out the cast are Flor Delis Alicea (Love the Skin You’re In), Anire Kim Amoda (The Penguin), Noah Cottrell (The Spiderwick Chronicles), Iesha Daniels, Sophie Dieterlen, Alexandra Doke (City on Fire), and Maeve Press (Everything’s Gonna Be Okay). Drew Goddard will serve as executive producer via Goddard Textiles along with Sarah Esberg. “They’ve done a wonderful job capturing Louis Sachar’s unique spirit,” Goddard said of the project. “To say much more about what they have in store would spoil all the fun.”
