Conclave Viewership Shoots Up 283% Following Death Of Pope Francis

Pope Francis’ passing has led to a 283% surge in viewership for the Oscar award winning film, Conclave, which details what happens in the Vatican when church leaders decide who will be the next pope.

Conclave was nominated for eight Oscars, and it is available on assorted streaming platforms worldwide.

The pope’s death was announced early on Easter Monday.

According to Luminate, which tracks streaming viewership, Conclave was viewed for about 1.8m minutes on 20 April, and 6.9m minutes the next day – an increase of 283%.

The Two Popes, also on Netflix, also saw a 417 percent increase in viewership over that same period, jumping from 290,000 minutes to 1.5 million minutes.

The awards season for Conclave had ironically coincided with Pope Francis’ hospitalisation for kidney failure in February.

Conclave’s viewership numbers are expected to climb even higher in the coming days, with Pope Francis’ funeral to be held in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome on Saturday.
