The customer took to Reddit to share their shock over the cost, writing, "Not here to name and shame a local business, but when did the humble smashed avo on toast cost more than fish and chips? Is this the norm elsewhere?"
"I nearly fell off my chair paying $5.89 for a medium coffee in Mitcham."
The poster attached a photo of the menu, which listed the $27.90 smashed avocado dish served with crumbled feta, pumpkin hummus, melody tomatoes, a roasted seed mix, two poached eggs, and a lemon wedge on lightly toasted sourdough.
Other menu items, including fish and chips ($26.90), eggs benny ($22.90) and a brunch burger ($25.90), all cost less than the smashed avo.
Commenters were quick to condemn the pricey menu, with one person writing, "It's so cheap to make smashed avocado at home (when in season) that I resent paying for it at a cafe. "
"Costs are getting really ridiculous. They are going to put themselves out of business at those prices. The irony is, though, they probably have to raise prices to make ends meet. It's a vicious cycle," wrote another.
Others pointed out that the cafe wasn't to blame for inflation, with one saying, "$26 is the new $19.50".
"This is inflation, this is what it looks like. I don't work in this industry, but all their costs are up, rent, supplies, utilities, etc," said another.
