Aussies Shocked To Learn That Beloved Vegemite Is Cheaper In The UK

While our beloved Vegemite has been proudly made in Australia since the 1920s, Aussies have been left shocked after discovering that the salty spread is cheaper to buy in the UK.

The revelation comes as a TikToker by the name of Price Check Guy did a little digging on the cost of a jar of Vegemite at Tesco in the UK, versus Coles and Woolworths in Australia.

He was prompted to investigate after a follower explained that she was able to purchase Vegemite from a small town in Scotland for cheaper than what it sells for Down Under.

“I'm gonna be pretty upset if this is true. Is Vegemite cheaper in a small town in Scotland than from Coles and Woolies in Australia? Let's find out,” the video begins.

To his surprise, there was a 77c price difference. “What is going on?” he asked.

A 220g jar of Vegemite sells at Tesco in the UK £2.20 ($4.25 AUD), while the same product will set Aussies back $5 at Coles in Australia.

As for Woolworths, a slightly large 280g jar of Vegemite is priced at $6.20.

While there are several factors to take into account when comparing the two markets, including GST on food, wages, taxes, and the general cost of running a business in Australia and the UK, many Aussies still aren’t happy Jan.

“It's cheaper to have Vegemite delivered to my door by Amazon than it is to buy it at Coles or Woolworths. Wild,” one user commented.

“Should send this to Vegemite. This is shameful,” another wrote.

One said, “That’s un-Australian”.

“For me it’s paying that much for Vegemite when I’m in the same suburb it was made in,” another pointed out.

“Stitched up Straya!!!” one wrote.

And then there was this commenter, who was just plain wrong, “The only correct place for Vegemite is in the bin. Marmite for the win”.
