The Simpsons Releases ‘Series Finale’ But It’s Not Finishing…

The Simpsons premiered its 36th season over the weekend, but fans are worried the end is coming for the cartoon after the 'series finale' episode was aired.

The episode titled 'Bart's Birthday' featured animated versions of the show's creators and celebrity guests that had featured in the show all gathered at a "final" night hosted by Conan O'Brien, who was a writer of the show in the past.

"It's such an honour to be with you all for the series finale of 'The Simpsons. I knew I was the right man for the job because I've hosted the last episode of three of my own shows and counting," O'Brien says in the episode.

"Well, it's true. Fox has decided to end the Simpsons. This show was such a special part of my early career, so being here means the world to me. Also, I left a sweater in the writer's room in 1993. This is the only way they'll let me get it back. This theatre is full of the many celebrities who've appeared on 'The Simpsons' over the years and who have come to say farewell.

"Now, not many people know this, but Fox has been trying to end it for years. When the very first episode aired in 1989, the viewers agreed on one thing: It wasn't as funny as it used to be."

A raft of clips were then played from previous episodes, which Conan said were supposed to be "series finales".

After the montage, a clip was shown of Moe's bar shutting down and Mr Burns dying as a dramatic ending.

But the episode ended in an even more confusing way, with Bart returning home to find it was his 11th birthday. Bart, who has been ten years old for the entire show, refuses to blow out the candles, resulting in Homer attempting to strangle him.

The show then rebooted with Bart, once again 10 years old.

So, while fans were confused and worried by the nostalgic walk down memory lane, Disney+ has confirmed that new episodes will continue airing for much of the year, and the show is staying around for now.
