Woman Cops $410 Fine For Not Wearing Her Seatbelt Correctly

A NSW driver has vented her frustration after copping a $410 fine for temporarily wearing her seatbelt under her chest.

Posting to LinkedIn, Alice Brennan, posted a photo of the incident in which you can see her sitting in the front with her seatbelt diagonally across her stomach.

“JUST GOT FINED $410 FOR TEMPORARILY WEARING MY SEATBELT LIKE THIS. Surely that's not right?” the post read.

Seatbelt enforcement came into effect in NSW on July 1, and the Transport for NSW website explains that states seat belt detection cameras work by using 'the existing mobile phone detection cameras to capture clear images of passing vehicles in all traffic and weather conditions'.

'Artificial intelligence (AI) software automatically reviews images and detects potential offences,' it reads.

The website adds images 'that are likely to show that a seatbelt is not worn or is worn incorrectly, are then verified by trained personnel'.

Social media users were quick to side with Brennan and label the fine excessive.

One woman said she finds it difficult to wear a seatbelt in the standard way due to a medical issue.

‘I have a port-a-cath for chemotherapy and the seat belt cuts right across it which is painful at certain times, and impossible while connected to a surefuser. It’s only a matter of time until I cop a fine for the same thing, and have to go through it all with the cops,’ she wrote.

‘Those seatbelts are made for men’s bodies and have been shown to be harmful to women in some accidents.’

'That's completely ridiculous! Appeal if you can!' another said.

‘Wow! That feels so creepy somehow that there is that level of visibility into your vehicle,’ another pointed out.

'Take it to court and say your boob was sore. Honestly, unless the schematics of seatbelt wearing is legislated, you'll get off,’ a final commenter said.'
