Viral Video Of Overwhelmed Mum Sparks The ‘17 Diapers’ Movement

In a now-viral TikTok, a mum has shown 17 dirty diapers laying around her house to normalise parenting overwhelm, prompting a movement that is seeing mums share their toughest moments online.

The video was shared by travel nurse and mum-of-two, Hannah Hiatt, who goes by @hannah_bhiatt on TikTok.

“Let’s pick up all the dirty diapers I have lying around my house,” she begins.

“I don’t own a diaper pail or a Diaper Genie…[diapers] just kind of get thrown around my house and then we just collect them in a bag at the end of the day and take them out to the dumpster. I have been solo parenting for the last 24 hours so we are going to see how many dirty diapers we have laying around with two kids.”

"I promise you, I'm not even exaggerating, this has only been 24 hours," Hannah says as she collects diapers from all over the house.

In all, she found 17.

Hannah explained that her husband was out of town and having been sick and injured, she was solo parenting and other things took priority.

The TikTok has been viewed more than 7.2 millions times to date, and has been met with a mixture of support and mum-shaming from users online.

However, the hashtag #17diapers has also been used almost 21,000 times by other mothers sharing their own ‘17 diaper moments’, normalising the messy side of motherhood and postpartum support.

The series serves as a candid reminder that postpartum mums don’t have it easy.

“My 17 diapers was so bad I would hide in the closet to cry so my oldest kids didn’t see me,” one user posted.

“My 17 diapers was so bad that I didn’t shower for 12 days straight, but my babies were bathed,” another wrote.

One poster wrote, “My 17 diapers was my son watching six movies a day for three months straight while my husband worked three jobs.”

“My 17 diapers are the ten bottles that still need to be cleaned from yesterday,” another said. Speaking with PEOPLE about the trend, Hannah said, "It was no longer people shaming me, but people sharing their '17 diapers' moment as a mom”.

"They were sharing struggles with postpartum depression and anxiety. They were sharing how hard it was to get out of bed, to shower, and even feed themselves let alone breastfeeding a newborn."

@hillaryhelennn 17 diapers comes in all different forms and my hope is to continue to create a community where people support others when they share their 17 diapers instead of shaming them because remember — we’re all in this together 🫶🏽 #postpartum #postpartumrecovery #postpartumjourney #firsttimemom #momsoftiktok #17diapers ♬ original sound - Hillary Wichlin
