A ski jumping victory in the classic Two Nights Tour at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen means a cash prize but only for the men, as German star Selina Freitag explains she won shower gel, shampoo and a few towels.
“The men receive 3,000 Swiss francs (equivalent to approximately $5,200AUD) for a win in the qualifying round. I got a bag with shower gel, shampoo, and four towels,” says 23-year-old Freitag, who won Monday's qualifying round in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in a recent interview.
"I don't want to complain too much about it, but you can see the differences,” she added.
And that’s just the qualifying rounds.
The winner's prizes for a total victory in each mini-tour also differ significantly.
Slovenian Nika Prevc, winner of the ladies' two-day tour, won 115,000 kronor (roughly $25,500AUD) for her win. Meanwhile, the winner of the men's ski jumping week received over 1.2 million kronor (around $267,000AUD).
It’s not known if Prevc received any toiletries or gift vouchers for Mecca or her cash prize, but one can only hope.
The Two Nights Tour highlights the extreme gender inequality faced by female athletes.
