Directed by Halina Reijn, Babygirl follows Romy, a powerful CEO (Kidman) who becomes embroiled in a forbidden relationship with her much younger intern (Harris Dickinson).
The film debuted at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, where the 57-year-old earned herself the Best Actress award for her portrayal of Romy.
In a 50 Shades of Grey-esque manner, Babygirl explores elements of domination and submission with a script that Kidman was “sort of hypnotised” by.
In a revealing interview with The Sun, Kidman divulged that she was “turned on” by the film but that the sex scenes were extremely demanding.
“There were times when we were shooting where I was like, ‘I don’t want to orgasm any more,” Kidman said.
“Don’t come near me. I hate doing this. I don’t care if I am never touched again in my life!” she continued.
Kidman says that she was “so present all the time” during the sex scenes that it was “almost burnout” for her.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Kidman touched on her experience with director Halina Reijn, saying that it was helpful having a female director as she “didn’t feel exploited.”
“I don’t think I could have done it, working with a man,” Kidman admitted. “I actually think the only way I could do this was with her because the two of us would sit and talk.”
“Being in the hands of Halina, I knew she wasn’t going to exploit me. … I felt very much a part of it. It’s the story that I wanted to be a part of, that I wanted to tell, and every part of me was committed to that.”
Reijn says she’s certain of one thing when it comes to Babygirl: "That is that we made a really hot movie.”
“I don't know about good, bad—that’s up to everybody—but I’m sure of that.”
Babygirl will hit Australian cinemas on 10 January 2025.
