The company has revealed that John Lithgow will play Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore alongside Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall.
HBO also confirmed that Hot Fuzz star Nick Frost will be playing the beloved character Rubeus Hagrid after weeks of speculation, and Paapa Essiedu will be playing Severus Snape.
Broadway actor Luke Thallon will play Professor Quirinus Quirrell and Welsh actor Paul Whitehouse will be playing Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch.
The series is set up to run for more than a decade, showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director and executive producer Mark Mylod said.
“We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch,” the pair said.
“We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.”
The show is due to begin filming in mid-2025, with the first season being released as early as next year.
No announcements have been made about who will be cast as the leading trio of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.
The open casting call reportedly attracted more than 30,000 submissions.
There are also rumours that Academy Award-winning actor Cillian Murphy will play Voldemort.
Author of the astronomically successful book series JK Rowling will serve as an executive producer on the show, which HBO has said will be a “faithful adaptation” of her books.
