The alert, which was marked “test”, was sent via a push notification to users of the BOM weather app, and included warnings for Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland.
BOM had warned the public about the test with a post on X prior to the warnings being sent, writing “The Bureau is testing the tsunami early warning system for Australia.”
“Please be advised that between 11AM-12PM AEST on Wednesday 25 September 2024, we will issue a **TEST** post. Please disregard this post.”
BOM apologised for the error in a statement, and reiterated that there was no tsunami threat to Australia.
“The test warnings were issued to the public in error as part of tests to tsunami early warning system software,” the statement read.
“The Bureau acknowledges and apologises for any confusion that this test has caused.”
The alerts were part of the BOM's transition to a new software.
