The Canadian rocker announced the news at QPAC’s Lyric Theatre during one of his So Happy It Hurts tour shows.
“I’m thrilled Pretty Woman is finally in Australia. I went to see it last year, and it blew me away,” Adams said.
The 65-year-old singer explained that the idea of a Pretty Woman musical was first planted by a former girlfriend who had been performing in a West End production of Dirty Daning in 2007.
“I don’t think in 2007 Disney wanted to do the story, you know, billionaire meets hooker,” Adams told QPAC.
“It was right in the Me Too (movement) … even when we were making it, we were worried about the association.”
“In fact, even in the promotion of the original musical back in 2018, there was the amazing outfit and the high boots, and you won’t find a photo of it because they wanted to play down that image of her as a hooker.”
She said she wanted to see the rom-com made for the stage. However, Disney, who co-owns the film, shut down the idea.
Pretty Woman: The Musical has already seen huge success on Broadway and the West End.
Producer Suzanne Jones of JONES Theatrical Group said that casting will begin in early March.
“We are pretty sure we have already found our Vivian … but we are still looking for our Edward,” Jones said.
“I’ve sat in the audition space in the last couple of weeks … it’s pretty amazing sitting there listening to them, singing these songs, but also this dialogue that you just, I flashed being four because I was four when the movie (came out)”
“Brisbane is this really great secret that everybody else hasn’t worked out yet,” Jones said.
