Aussies Spending More On Wedding Gifts Despite Cost Of Living Crisis

Despite the current cost-of-living crisis, wedding guests are reportedly dropping more cash on congratulatory gifts this year compared to last year.

According to Easy Weddings' 10th Annual Australian Wedding Industry Report, guests are spending 21 per cent more than they did in 2023.

"With the increased cost of living, guests have become more generous in their gift-giving at weddings, spending about $50 more than last year on close friends and family, and $13 more for couples outside their immediate circle," reads the report.

The report also revealed that 90 per cent of couples would prefer cash as a gift, with nine per cent wanting guests to contribute directly to their honeymoon registry.

This could reflect couples feeling the pinch of planning a wedding.

Easy Weddings' also revealed that 10 per cent of couples have a shorter engagement to avoid price raises in the future, and a whopping 30 per cent of couples are prolonging their engagement by around a year so that they have more time to save.

Two per cent of couples have thrown in the towel on having a wedding, choosing to skip the expensive event altogether and opting for an intimate elopement.

In 2024, it's reported that the average cost of a wedding in Australia will set a couple back $35,315, which is a four-and-a-half per cent increase from last year.

However, 13 per cent of couples are splashing out on their big day and spending over $60,000 on their nuptials.
