Study Shows Husbands Stress Women Out More Than Their Children

A study of 7,000 mothers has revealed that almost half of the participants reported that their biggest stressor in life is their partners, not their children.

TODAY conducted the study, asking participants to rank their stress levels from 1-10. The average stress level came to a hefty 8.5 out of 10.

So, what’s got mums feeling so stressed?

Well, for 46 per cent of them, their husbands are a bigger source of stress than their kids.

Deno Fleno, a mum in New Britain, Connecticut, explained the rationale behind it perfectly to TODAY.

“A 7-year-old is going to be a 7-year-old. But a 35-year-old acting like a 7-year-old is more stressful, because they should know better,” Fleno said.

Georgina Sturmer is a registered counsellor who specialises in helping women be confident in their relationships.

Sturmer told GoodToKnow, "When it comes to a husband and wife, or any model of co-parenting, the dynamic can feel like shifting sands. Like an imbalanced power struggle.”

"Maybe there’s simmering anger or resentment about pulling our weight in household tasks. Or in decisions around money, home life, socialising and much more. There are so many potential triggers for disagreement, and we are often tired or overwhelmed by the physical or mental load of everything that needs to get done.”

“This sometimes means that instead of finding our co-parent supportive, we can actually feel as if they are simply adding an extra weight to our lives."

It’s not necessarily just a guy thing. Anecdotally, lesbian couples with kids report feeling the same frustration with their partner. Raising kids is just stressful, and often parents fall into the ‘good cop’ and ‘bad cop’ roles that divide them.

The study also found that mothers stress most about not having enough time to get everything done, with three-quarters of mums with partners reporting they do most of the parenting and household duties.

So, it seems the added burden of carrying the bulk of the mental load, in addition to the bulk of the household duties, has led to women growing increasingly frustrated and stressed out with their husbands.
