Paul Mescal Addresses Viral Moment With Saoirse Ronan On The Graham Norton Show

Paul Mescal has addressed the viral moment he shared with fellow Irish actor Saoirse Ronan on The Graham Norton Show, describing her as "the smartest person in the room".

"I've known Saoirse for four years now, and she is one of my dearest friends," Mescal told The Sydney Morning Herald.

"And as long as I've known her, she's probably been the smartest person in the room. And for her to be able to make that point so elegantly, I just fundamentally agree with it.

"I'm glad that she's drawn attention to the larger context of the conversation in terms of what preceded it. But fundamentally, her point is totally and utterly correct."

Ronan and Mescal appeared on The Graham Norton Show alongside Eddie Redmayne and Denzel Washington in October when the conversation turned to the training Redmayne did in preparation for his latest role as an assassin - including learning how to use his mobile phone as a weapon as a form of self-defence.

During the conversation, Mescal joked, "If someone attacked me, I'm not gonna go, 'Phone,'" while miming himself reaching for his phone.

"Sorry, mum, one second—bang," he continued, miming interrupting a phone call to punch an attacker.

The male guests joked about the situation until Ronan interjected, saying, "That's what girls have to think about all the time."

"Am I right, ladies?" Ronan asked the crowd, which was met with applause and cheering from the audience.

The moment took social media by storm, with many applauding Ronan for highlighting the issue of women's safety.

Ronan spoke about the viral moment in a recent appearance on the Today show, saying it's the kind of conversation she regularly has with her friends.

"I think people have needed something like this on a platform like that to go 'oh okay, we can talk about it now,'" she said.

"All of our little young girls that are growing up that we explain, 'This is the mentality that a woman has to have and that a young girl has to have every day of her life.'"
