Following a five-year renovation, Xiaomeisha Sea World in Shenzhen opened its doors on October 1 to excited visitors.
Around 100,000 visitors flocked to the aquarium, paying around $40 to enter the aquarium and catch a glimpse at its highly anticipated whale shark attraction.
However, it didn’t take long for visitors to notice something fishy about the whale shark.
Photos taken through the tank glass show the robotic shark sporting obvious gaps in its torso, leaving many visitors feeling scammed.
They flooded Xiaomeisha's social media with criticism regarding the aquarium’s faux shark.
“Even though it’s for the sake of animal protection, I’d rather they didn’t have one at all than show a fake one,” one user wrote.
“The venue isn’t large enough, and even the whale shark is artificial,” another said.
“The most disappointing part was the whale shark exhibit,” wrote another. “When I heard the name, I was full of anticipation, but when I arrived, I saw a mechanical whale shark. It’s not interesting at all.”
Xiaomeisha have addressed the backlash, explaining that the robo-shark was never meant to fool visitors, but was created to adhere to laws banning the trade of whale sharks.
