Pesto The Penguin Losing Fluff As He Enters Awkward Teenage Phase

Pesto, the giant baby penguin that took the world by storm, has entered his awkward teenage phase, losing his juvenile brown feathers.

Pesto looks like he’s sporting a little brown vest as he sheds his feathers.

SEA LIFE Aquarium keeper Tabitha Brown told ABC News that the internet sensation weighed in at 24.8kg in October, still double the weight of his parents, which are 11kg and 12kg.

"We don't weigh them when they are going through that moult, but we would say [he is] about 20kg at the moment," she said.

It takes king penguin chicks about six weeks to lose their baby feathers, and this can require a lot of energy. The chicks also lose weight in the process.

“Don’t worry, he’ll still be just as adorable. He’ll just be rocking his new tuxedo!” the aquarium said.
