Labor Promises 20% Cut To HECS Debts

As an election year looms, the political pandering has begun.

The Prime Minister is out to prove he’s still in touch with the youth of today, promising a re-elected Labor government will take 20% of HECS debts.

Anthony Albanese has also lifted the payback threshold for HECS loans from about $54,000 to $67,000.

Labor is trying to appeal to the Gen Zers that have headed toward Green-er pastures.

The announcement’s timing is convenient after a week of bad press. 

Education Minister Jason Clare joined the long list of pollies coming clean on receiving perks.

That list also includes Peter Dutton, Mark Dreyfus, Mark Butler, Adam Bandt, Bridget McKenzie and Anthony Albanese.

So has Albo done enough to pull focus to his cost of living relief, or does the upgrade uproar have his re-election campaign off to a turbulent start?
