Deaf Rescue Dog Elle Named 2025 Australian Dog Of The Year

Elle is a deaf rescue dog who uses sign language to support anxious children in the classroom, and she has just been crowned Australian Dog of the Year for 2025.

Elle is a Border Collie x Koolie and while she may deaf, she hasn’t let that stop her from making a difference in the lives of countless school children.

As a school therapy dog, Elle helps children navigate anxiety, tough days, and behavioural challenges.

Students are motivated to behave well in the classroom, to earn reward cards to perform tricks with Elle.

She also teaches children how to approach dogs safely and communicate using sign language.

It’s not just the students that love Elle, with staff members also enamoured by the canine.

She was even part of the school staff photo, a testament to what a valued member of the school community she is.

Elle reminds us how integral dogs are to the well-being of children and adults, alike.
