Dangers Of Smart Home Tech Explained

Doorbells answered from afar. Ovens you can start from work. Or a smart fridge that re-orders your milk.

But the more connected we are… the more hackable.

One study showed smart homes can experience up to 12 thousand attempted hacks per week, with everything from thermostats to baby monitors a potential risk.

And it’s possible we are being watched… by our vacuum cleaners.

ABC journalist Julian Fell has exposed the vulnerabilities of the Ecovacs robot vacuum cleaner detailing just how easy it was to use the cleaner’s bluetooth to gain access to the vac’s camera and entire home network.

But smart devices aren’t just a conflict between handy-ness and hacking – earlier this year, power company Energex controversially turned-down almost 170-thousand air conditioners remotely to protect a struggling power grid.

So, do we need to better protect our devices and appliances… or is it time to rethink the smart house revolution altogether?
