In 2020, the Wicked star previously portrayed Mary Magdalene in an all-female concept of the play Jesus Christ Superstar: She Is Risen.
The Oscar nominee will be taking part in the musical that is set to run at the Hollywood Bowl between August 1 and August 3.
However, fans are divided, with some elated to hear Erivo taking on the role, while others are outraged, claiming it to be ‘blasphemy.’

One fan wrote: “As if Cynthia already wasn’t Jesus in the world of Theatre. PRAISE GOD FOR THIS.”
Another asked if Erivo’s Wicked co-star Ariana Grande would be playing Mary Magdalene.
One Portuguese fan pointed out, “Jesus is not about gender or appearance; it's about a message, and it's about meaning, and I couldn't be more excited to see what Cynthia will bring to this character, she always gives her all.”
Others think it’s blasphemous for a woman to be playing the male role of Jesus, with many people saying that the casting is making a mockery of God and Jesus.
Tony-winning choreographer Sergio Trujillo will be directing and choreographing the production. Additional casting details have yet to be announced.
