Bryan Cranston Reveals Why His Sitcom Son Won’t Return for Malcolm in the Middle Revival

Malcolm in the Middle is officially getting a four-episode revival, but Erik Per Sullivan, who played youngest brother Dewey, won’t be returning to the chaos. Because he’s busy getting his master’s at Harvard.

Bryan Cranston, who played the lovably clueless dad Hal, shared the update on the Fly on the Wall podcast with Dana Carvey and David Spade.

"It's amazing — the boys who played my sons are now around the age I was when we started the show, and they’ve got kids of their own," Cranston said, referring to his sitcom sons played by Christopher Kennedy Masterson (Reese), Frankie Muniz (Malcolm), Justin Berfield (Reese), and Erik Per Sullivan (Dewey).

When asked about Per Sullivan’s involvement in the revival, Cranston recalled their recent chat:

"I told Erik, 'Hey, the show's coming back!' and he said, 'That's fantastic!' So I said, 'Great, can’t wait to have you back.' And he goes, 'Oh no, I don’t want to do it — but that’s fantastic!'”

Cranston added with a laugh, “He’s actually at Harvard, getting his master’s. He told me, ‘I haven’t acted since I was 9. I’m not into it.’”

So while Dewey won’t be back to stir up trouble, it turns out he’s graduated from middle child antics to Ivy League academia.
