Mount Gower Hike
Chris heads to Lord Howe Island, a small paradise off the NSW Coast to complete the surf to summit hike
Lord Howe Island lies approximately 600 km northeast of Sydney and southeast of Brisbane. It forms part of the state of New South Wales.
After a quick surf in the crystal clear waters it’s time to head right up to the top of the islands highest point on Mount Gower.
Dean Hiscox of Lord Howe Island Tours was the Lord Howe Island ranger for 16 years so he is an expert of the island.
The trek to the top of Mount Gower is considered Australia’s hardest day hike.
The trek takes around nine hours - approximately five hours to reach the summit and another four hours to return
During the trek Chris enjoys the views of Balls Pyramid, Mt Lidgbird, the lagoon and the Island’s northern settlement area as he reaches the 875 metre peak.
Chris clings onto the side of the mountain, climbs almost vertical terrain and splits his pants, before witnessing a view that has to be seen to be believed.
There are plenty of things to do on Lord Howe Island including bird watching, snorkelling, diving, water sports and bike riding.
Incredible bird life is waiting for Chris at the summit as Mt Gower is the only known nesting place for Providence Petrel, a curious sea bird that comes flocking in when they hear strange noises.
Chris too is curious to see how they will react to the sounds of Miguel’s laugh, which he blasts from his portable speaker.
